Situated at the north west end of Stuart Lake, this private island has almost 1 km of shoreline (3,160 feet). Surrounded by beautiful beaches, the island has two bays which offer good morrage to boats - one on the north side, and the other on the south. American Island is well-treed, and rises to a height of 15 feet (4.6 m) at its centre.

The lake itself is the seventh largest in the province, running 90 km (56 mi.) north-south, and 13 km (8 mi.) east-west. Known for its recreational opportunities, the area is a sportsman's dream. The fishing in Stuart Lake is good (trout, kokanee, whitefish), as is the boating and swimming. In winter, cross country and downhil skiing are popular pastimes, as well as snowmobiling.
