Long Caye, Belize

Perched on the brink of the continental shelf, our island base of Long Caye lies on the slender coral ring of Glover's Reef, an atoll 35 miles offshore from Dangriga, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

You Won't Believe Your Eyes Glover's Reef encompasses an 82-square mile shallow lagoon surrounded by the deep waters of the open sea. Within this necklace of coral, you'll find more than 700 pristine patch reefs brimming with the richest variety of marine life in the Caribbean - from the delicate fan coral and spiny urchin to the colourful stoplight parrot fish and elegant southern sting ray. Snorkellers and divers alike are enchanted by the spectrum of sea life here, whether they're wading just off shore or exploring the depths along "The Wall", a world-class dive site off the back of Long Caye.

Overhead and along the sand you'll spot feathered creatures, too - osprey, pelicans, frigate birds, green-backed heron and others, especially during migratory periods. We also have green iguanas living on the island. In recognition of the outstanding natural quality of Glover's ecosystem, it has been designated a National Marine Reserve and in 1997 was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Make Yourself at Home Featured on the cover of Outside Magazine, our outdoor resort base at Long Caye was built with the goal of preserving the integrity of this ecosystem and our facilities have been kept rustic by design. Guests love their thatch-roofed cabanas, each complete with a porch overlooking the sea. Each tent palapa is unique and private, some are perched on the beach, and others are hidden beneath the palms. On every trip, our kitchen and dining hall, with open-air views of the lagoon and a neighbouring island, become the centre of community life. We've made sure our entire Water Sports Centre blends into the undeveloped, natural atmosphere of this tropical island, unspoiled by the modern world, so you can truly escape. And our trips are all-inclusive for your convenience. Since we are the only ones on the island, all of our beaches are completely private! Shaded by a forest of palms and surrounded by endless coral reefs, Long Caye is truly a tropical paradise.

What Would You Like to Do Today? The facilities and setting make Long Caye a spectacular base for both adventure and relaxation. We provide high-quality equipment and instruction so you can take to the water for all the thrilling sea kayaking, surf kayaking, and windsurfing you could possibly want. But there's plenty of opportunities for the other joys of island life too, not the least of which are the feasts that our local cooks prepare. Grouper Creole, conch fritters, and coconut-baked fish are just some of the seafood delicacies you'll enjoy. Take a break from the sea with a game of beach volleyball. Join in the unique fun of our hermit-crab races. Or watch the sunset, lounging in a hammock. Here, you set your own pace.

Facilities This is the most luxurious island "base camp" you've ever seen. The ever-present breeze keeps the temperatures well below what they are on the mainland. We keep the island in as natural a state as possible, and there is no electricity or plumbing in the cabanas or tent palapas. Our spacious island (13.5 acres) and rustic facilities ensure your comfort without compromising the adventure of living on an undeveloped and uncrowded island. Best of all, a hammock with your name on it is waiting under the palms.

Cabanas Sea Kayak Glover's Reef guests stay in two-person cabanas, perched above the surf. Each cabana has beds with air mattresses and a porch with hammocks and lounge chairs.

Belize Adventure Week

Belize Adventure Week, Saturday - Saturday, US$ 2195 US

2006: January 7, 14, 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 4, 11, 18, 25; April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.

Imitated but not equalled, Belize Adventure Week is widely acclaimed as one of the world’s top adventure trips. Slickrock pioneered the concept of multi-sport vacations with this tour, and you cannot find another trip anywhere that packs so many sports into one week! Our high-action tour features sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, caving, underground boating, surf kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing, kayak kite sailing, fishing, jungle hiking, and Mayan ruins.

Your adventure begins with a series of inland activities in the Maya Mountains. Each day overflows with a multitude of exciting sports. We run a whitewater river by kayak, hike on jungle trails, venture deep into a sacred Mayan ceremonial cave, climb Mayan ruins, and descend an underground river by raft, finding our way with headlamps.

Midweek we transfer to our private island paradise for three days of sea kayaking, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, surf kayaking, and kayak kite sailing! See our Sea Kayak Glover's Reef and our Long Caye at Glover's Reef pages for details on this coral island paradise!

Small Trip Surcharge: Although our trip minimum for all trips is 4 guests, we will run a trip for two-three guests for a surcharge of $300/person. When signing up for a trip, all guests need to be aware they will be charged this additional fee if the trip does not reach at least four persons. We will bill the guest two weeks prior to departure for this additional fee to avoid unnecessary refunding of fees. Trips with only one guest will be cancelled.

Back to Back Trips Are an Even Better Deal: If you book two trips "back-to-back" (trips with overlapping overnight accommodations with Slickrock) you will receive 20% off the least expensive of the two itineraries. This discount is not available for those booking through an agent eligible for commissions, and also not available in addition to any other discounts you may already be receiving.
