Brethour Island, British Columbia

Brethour contains some 46 acres and is roughly rectangular in shape, with several long fingers on the north-west. The northerly portion of this island property for sale has been cleared and cultivated into gardens and pasture, and for a previous owner, this area provided an interesting six-hole golf course. Several deep ponds provide all the water needed for animals and irrigation. Cedar, Douglas Fir, Arbutus, Maple and Garry Oak tree the middle ridge, which at its highest point reaches 100 feet above sea level. A well kept driveway leads all around the island and gives access to the numerous covers, beaches and bays.

In addition to exceptional sailing and fishing, windsurfing and scuba diving conditions are ideal. Toward the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula are two golf courses, a newly constructed community swimming pool and an ice rink complex. Tennis, horseback riding and flying clubs are nearby.

This property for sale, Brethour is home to native and migratory birds, such as ducks, geese, swallows, hummingbirds nesting eagles and blue herons. Otter and mink roam the shores. Seals live out on the rocks and whales are often seen passing close by.

The furnace is equipped to provide hot water heating by diesel, coal or wood. The house can also be heated by wood-burning stoves. Cooking is by propane gas or a wood cooking stove complete with oven. Refrigeration is by propane. Appliances such as the dishwasher and microwave operate with electricity provided by generators. The one-and-a-half room guest cottage has its own bathroom, kitchenette and fuel stove.

The one-storey caretaker's cottage was built in 1978. It consists of a living-room with a Franklin fireplace, modern kitchen with nook, bedroom, bathroom, utility room and a large sundeck. The barn contains a heated carpenter's workshop, boat storage, hay and feed storage, 2 horse stalls and chicken house. Next to the barn is the generator house with a mechanical workshop. There is a pump house and water tank, and a windmill to pump the irrigation water. The 24 ft. boathouse, new in 1984, has a 60 ft. dock with a loading ramp for boats and seaplanes and is located on the northwest end of the island, well-protected by an impressive rock breakwater constructed in 1981. The dock could easily be extended to accommodate a yacht of up to 120 feet.
