Named for the H.M.S. Thetis, a British 36-gun frigate on the Pacific Station from 1851 to 1853, Thetis Island is the smallest and least populated of the southern Gulf Islands that enjoy regular car ferry service from Vancouver Island.

There is also a post office, local 9-1-1 service, fire and emergency response, a community hall, elementary school and a church. Thetis Island is easily accessible from Vancouver, Victoria or Seattle. The vehicle ferry offers regular sailings from Vancouver Island every 90 minutes on a year-round basis. There are also regularly scheduled flights from Vancouver International Airport. Crossing time from Vancouver is about 15 to 20 minutes by float plane.
