Named for the H.M.S. Thetis, a British 36-gun frigate on the Pacific Station from 1851 to 1853, Thetis Island is the smallest and least populated of the southern Gulf Islands that enjoy regular car ferry service from Vancouver Island.
With a year-round population of about 340 and a land area of 4 square miles, this local secret offers a relaxed and rural environment that still seems untouched by the world around it. Development on Thetis Island is limited. There are two marinas, two convenience stores, a pub, restaurants and a coffee shop. There is also a post office, local 9-1-1 service, fire and emergency response, a community hall, elementary school and a church. Residents include professionals, writers, artisans, builders and active and semi-retired people.
Thetis Island is easily accessible from Vancouver, Victoria or Seattle. The vehicle ferry offers regular sailings from Vancouver Island every 90 minutes on a year-round basis. There are also regularly scheduled flights from Vancouver International Airport. Crossing time from Vancouver is about 15 to 20 minutes by float plane.
