Mayne Island (Horton Bay)
Mayne Island (Horton Bay), British ColumbiaMayne Island is located in British Columbia's famous Southern Gulf Islands, named for Lieutenant Richard Charles Mayne of the Survey ship HMS Plumper (1857-1860). The earliest settlers registered claims in the Miner's Bay area of Mayne Island in 1859. Today, Mayne Island is one of the most popular of all the Southern Gulf Islands with a year round population of about 900. Full services are available including restaurants, medical services, groceries and retail shops, galleries and artisans, and a variety of different types of accommodation. Regular scheduled ferry service is available from Tsawwassen in Vancouver and Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. There are two year-round homes and two smaller cottages built on the property .The largest residence is a hand-built 1,200 square foot, 1.5 level log home with bathroom, kitchen and loft. At this location, which overlooks Horton Bay, there is also a barn, workshop and very unique cob constructed blacksmith shop. The other home is an A-frame residence situated on the Horton Bay waterfront, and is approximately 889 square feet. The water lease on Horton Bay provides for small boats and is accessible via the A-frame residence. Both the residences on the Horton Bay side of the property have productive wells, municipally supplied electric power and septic sewage disposal systems. The two smaller, summer use only, cottages are located on the Navy Channel side of the property atop the bluff. These cottages are serviced by a well but there are no other services. |
