On Barbareta you can experience an amazing array of activities, making it a unique tropical island adventure. In all of the Bay Islands of Honduras, only Barbareta offers all of these amenities right from your doorstep: scuba diving, snorkelling, fly fishing, deep sea fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hobie cat sailing, boat rides and jungle picnics.

The scuba diving around Barbareta is the best in the Bay Islands. Several snorkel and diving trips are included in the charter fee. However, divers and snorkellers must provide their own mask, snorkel, fins, and BC.

Diving from Barbareta is varied and extraordinary - from shallow reefs accessible from the beach, to colourful walls on the surrounding barrier reef and exciting drift dives. Each is pristine and full of life and unspoiled beauty. We can tailor your dives to specific interest of the group. To start with we'll share our best dive spots...

One of our favourite dives is the renowned Barbareta Wall, a 3-mile section of reefs that surrounds the island. The top of the reef above the wall starts at 30 feet and plunges almost vertically to over 300 feet. With such an extensive reef system, many dives can be made in the area taking in different sections each dive. Most of the common species of Caribbean marine life are found here. Black corals, large basket or orange elephant ear sponges, brilliant azure vase sponges, and large buff tube sponges add contour and texture to the wall. Because of its distance from civilization, this area is wild and pristine.

Snorkelling and diving trips to the Pigeon Cays provide a great variety of diverse coral reefs. Many colourful tropical fish live on the reefs around the island. Schools of Blue Tang, Clown Fish, Green Moray Eels, Red and Green Parrot Fish, large French Angel Fish, and the shy Spotted Drum are plentiful. In the sandy areas you can see large starfish and spotted manta rays. Picnics prepared by our friendly staff include fresh fruit, and seafood dishes, which are taken on the all day outing around the island.

Deep Sea and Guided Fly Fishing trips are both available. The Deep Sea trolling grounds begin less than 2 miles from the dock where the southern barrier reef drops off sharply to over 1000 feet in depth. Coupled with the westerly current, this produces an updraft of cold nutrients rich water flow. There is great fishing for Wahoo, Dolphin, King, Bonito and Billfish aboard the Southern Cross and with local fisherman in their traditional skiffs and dories. It is amazing to see the hundreds of Nassau and Black Grouper that gather around Barbareta to spawn on the December and January full moons.

Guided Fly Fishing for Bone, Permit, Tarpon and Snook can be arranged. There are many large grassy flat areas around Barbareta and the surrounding cays where Bones are found all year round. Permit come in with the cooler September waters, and inhabit the reefs and grassy flats through March when the trade winds begin to pick up. Tarpon and Snook are found year round in the inner bays and lagoons that lead into the mangrove and creek areas.

Hiking on the well marked 8 miles of trails that lead around the entire island, as well as several alternate interior routes which cut across the island, lead to the higher interior elevations of the island where the ancient Payan camps are located as well as the nesting areas of the Yellow Napped Amazon Parrot. With a sharp eye, one can spot many of the green iguana which feed in the upper branches of the tall Trumpet and Cahoon trees. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to spot the agouti feeding around the giant oak, almond, and mango trees. The rain forest, which covers most of the island, contains a wide variety of trees including Ceiba, Cedar, Wild Fig, Royal and Thatch Palm. Fruit trees found around the island include avocado, mango, and banana. The outer low land and shore areas are home to the Coconut, Sea grape, and Plum trees. Orchids and Lilies are found blooming seasonally.

Guides are available for hiking & horseback riding on the trails around the island. The more adventurous can hike on their own. There is also an all-day trip to a spring fed waterfall, on the neighbouring island of Guanaja, for hiking.
