When viewed from the water or air, this private island rising up out of Stuart Lake ressembles a great battle ship. Located a few hundred meters from shore, it is only 7.5 km (5 mi.) from the small town of Fort St.
James (pop. 2000). The island rises up from a beautiful sand and gravel beach on its southwest side, to attain heights of 50-100 feet (15-30 m) on its northeast side. Much of the island is a high, flat plateau, culminating in a tall cliff face on the northeast side which drops straight down into the lake. Battleship Island is covered in fir trees, with some pine and poplar as well. There is good moorage available on the southwest of the island.
Stuart Lake is the seventh largest lake in BC, spanning some 90 km (56 mi.) from north to south, and 13 km (8 mi.) from east to west. The area is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, with excellent fishing, boating, and hunting possibilites. In the winter, snowmobiling and both cross country and downhill skiing are activities of choice.
