Location Located in Gunn Lake, part of the mighty Winnipeg River System, Birch Island is 30 miles north of the Lake of the Woods and Kenora Ontario. There are approximately 45 miles of the Winnipeg River and five large lakes connected onto the system, with no portage required. History Birch Island was the private summer home of the western director of the Timothy Eaton Company during the early 1920s - a sumptuous era of servants and elegant living for the wealthy. The complex has undergone extensive renovations, while retaining the décor and elegance of the 20s and 30s.

The Main Lodge was constructed in 1914, about the time the Canadian National Railroad (CNR) opened up the northwestern Ontario wilderness. Indeed, until 1957, the only way to get to Birch Island Resort was by rail to the hamlet of Minaki.

The Boat House was added to Birch Island Resort in 1918 providing not only parking for the elegant mahogany launches of the day but also additional bedrooms and a magnificent entertainment room overlooking Gunn Lake.

Mike & Wendy Reid bought the island in 1978 and opened Birch Island Resort in 1980 after extensive renovations to bring the complex to "executive retreat" standards, without losing the charm, period elegance, and history of the resort.
