Carter Island is located at one of the broadest parts of the Lake adjacent to Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Consequently, no one can develop the nearest land to the Island. An underwater power cable provides power to the Island and an underwater phone cable provides 30 phone lines for communications. TV is through Direct TV service.

The Lighthouse looks West from the Island with beautiful sunset views across the Lake. It is on the SW point of the Island and was originally designed to eventually be a large guest house or second house for the Manor House. It has 3 bedroom suites, one on each floor.

The bottom floor of the lighthouse has a bedroom with one queen bed and two bunk beds, decorated as the kids’ room. On the same floor is a large den with pool table as well as a large pantry, storage area and the equipment room for the house.

The house has been wired for the 21st Century, with computer, cable and phone connections in every room. An Aegis control panel allows complete, programmable flexibility for every environment and security option.

The Island has a complete irrigation system installed over the entire Island, which feeds the creek and waterfall as well as programmed watering for lawn and shrubs.

The second floor is the main living area, with dining and family rooms open to the large kitchen area. A kingsize bedroom suite is also located on this floor as well as the wrap around deck. The third floor is the Master Suite with a huge walk-in closet, large bath with jacuzzi and flat panel TV for watching TV from the bed.

In addition to the deck on the west side of the house, there are two porches. One overlooks the Island and the other overlooks Smith Mountain. Both have outside speakers and overhead fans for comfortable lounging in hot summers.

In addition to ample dock space, the Dock House has slips for a 32 foot boat and a 26 foot boat. There is a lift for the 26 foot boat and one can be installed in the other slip. There is also a lift for two, three man Ski Doos.

Other amenities include a 23 foot Hurricane deck boat for fishing and skiing, two kayaks, skis, life jackets and other toys. There is also a large Rave Trampoline in the water.

The Dock House has a spiral staircase to a large storage area upstairs for winter storage of equipment and toys. Wide double doors allow easy access for moving large items in and out.

The Carriage House The second house on the Island, the Carriage House, was built primarily for housing yard and garden equipment and provide an area for a workshop. This is located in the basement with access through the large carriage doors. A large two/three bedroom house was built over the workshop/storage area, however, which competes with the Lighthouse for size, design and views.

The house has a master bedroom suite on the first floor and a dining area and kitchen open to the great room. The master bedroom suite has a large walk-in closet, and a large bathroom with jacuzzi and separate shower.

The first floor also has an office with a full bathroom that could be used as a third bedroom. The second floor has a balcony and area that might be used as a library, TV or reading area with a small outside covered porch overlooking the lake and Smith Mountain.

The Carriage House faces the State Park and Smith Mountain.

The North Dock has large dock space and a covered lift for two, three man Ski Doos or a ski boat. The work house on the dock houses a tool shed and pumping facilities for the irrigation system. There is also a ramp to facilitate loading and unloading of equipment and supplies.

Lands End Included with the Island is an acre in Franklin County on the lake for access to land. It includes a dock, 500 gallon gas tank for refueling boats, a large barn for storage and parking area. It provides easy access to and from the Island for supplies, people, and equipment.

Included with the Island is a large barge for transporting heavy equipment and a custom made 34 foot Munson Packboat. The Munson has capability of pushing the barge but also has a ramp for driving on a one ton vehicle for access of repair or delivery vehicles to the Island. It can carry 11,000 pounds at thirty miles per hour.
