Garden Island is known for its rich diversity of animal and plant life and, because of its thriving ecosystem, Garden Island's beautiful mountainous terrain and spectacular waterfalls provide endless opportunities for the eco-minded adventurer. As host to nearly all the bird species found in Fiji, the island is also a paradise for the avid bird watcher.
The Resort
Garden Island Resort consists of a mere 30 rooms. The Resort provides a quiet and relaxing lifestyle in tropical surroundings with pleasant, attentive staff and fine international cuisine.
Aqua-Trek Taveuni at Garden Island Resort is the first Gold Palm Resort to be awarded by PADI Australia in the region. The Golden Palm recognizes resorts that present a professional image, and demonstrate excellence in customer satisfaction, dive experiences, education, safety and environmental awareness
Diving
Garden Island Resort has some of the best diving in the region. All dives take place at the world famous Rainbow Reef. The distance to the majority of sites from the resort ranges from 10 to 30 minutes by boat. Reef diving is fairly shallow (30 to 70 feet), but there can be challenging tidal currents.
A typical dive involves mooring, briefing, descent down a line, and a guided tour. Drift dives are done when site and tide conditions are favourable.
Sample Dive Sites
The Zoo is another 100-foot wall dive with abundance of big fish including barracuda, reef sharks, bronze whalers, eagle rays and manta rays.
Annie's Bommie has been likened to a coral head that glows like a Christmas tree. The diversity of fish is also extraordinary including wrasse, parrotfish, damsels and a host of other species.
Jerry's Jelly is a series of coral heads covered in every conceivable colour of soft coral. It is a favorite of photographers because of the colours.
Cabbage Patch is a garden of unusual cabbage-shaped hard coral ranging in size from 3 to 15 feet (1 to 5 metres) in diameter. While cabbage-shaped coral is not a rarity in the area, this type of abundance is a mystery.
Things to do
Bouma Falls
Bouma Falls is one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Located in Tavoro National Park, it is a perfect destination for a half- or full-day trip.
Snorkelling Rainbow Reef
Rainbow Reef's spectacular underwater gardens are just a 20 minute boat ride away. This excellent snorkelling location is quite different from Korolevu Island. In addition to the beautiful coral, there are often multitudes of fish, and even an occasional reef shark.
Kayaking
Set off in one of the Dive Center's ocean kayaks and discover the beautiful beaches of Korolevu, or follow the coastline past Fijian villages, river inlets and occasional mangroves...
International Dateline
No visit to Taveuni is complete without visiting the 180th meridian, the International Dateline. Taveuni is one of the very few landmasses in the world that the meridian crosses and you are just a few minutes away.
Horseback Riding
Enjoy trail riding through the beautiful Garden Island plantations and rainforests with a journey that starts at Vatuwiri Resort at the southern end of Taveuni. A guide will lead you on a breathtaking ride enabling you to view this wonderful island from a different perspective.
