Dick Island
Dick Island, British ColumbiaLying just offshore of Texada Island, in the straight separating Vancouver Island from the BC mainland, Dick Island features a varied landscape of mossy knolls and hills. Cedar, juniper, arbutus and fir trees cover its 16 acres (64,750 sq. meters), while its beaches are a great venue for looking for oysters and clams. The climate is moderate, with an average high of 23°C (74°F) in summer, and 4.5°C (40°F) in winter. At low tide, the island is joined to Shelter Point, on nearby Texada Island, by a natural sand spit. A rustic14' x 20' (4.3 m x 6 m) Panabode cabin sits on the west end of the island. Fresh water is provided by a water line coming onto the island from Shelter Point, and Hydro is available at the end of the sand spit. From Shelter Point, it's a 30 minute drive to the unforgettably named Blubber Bay Ferry Terminal, where ferries depart hourly to the city of Powell River, on the BC mainland. |
