Accessibility: From George Town it is only 4 miles by boat to the island (a Boston Whaler can be rented in George Town, around US $1200 per week). It is a short haul to the grocery store which has its own dock where you can pick up your cart.

Elizabeth Island

Location: Elizabeth Island is located in the Great Exumas (Bahamas), 2.5 miles (4 km) to the north of George Town. Size: Elizabeth Island stretches across 99 acres (approx. 40.000 ha) and is around one mile long (ca. 1.6 km), with about 2 miles (approx. 3.2 km) of water frontage. Getting there: Exuma International Airport (George Town), with daily flights from Florida, North Carolina and Nassau. Description: Elizabeth Island features magnificent white sand beaches in coves and bays. The water is excellent for snorkelling, fishing, diving or sailing. Development: There are three other parties on the island, who comprise over 5 buildings which are unevenly spread over the island. Fresh water (cistern) and electricity (solar system) are available, but no telephone line has been run, yet. Note: The dock of a neighbour could be used and a house rented (USD 1000 per week) while the property was under construction.

Great Exumas

Location: Elizabeth Island is adjacent to Great Exuma and one of the largest of the 365 islands in the Bahamas's beautiful Exuma archipelago: approx. 320 miles (ca. 515 km) southeast of Miami. Size: approx. 54,400 acres (about 22,015 ha) Capital: George Town Population: 4,000 Currency: Bahamian dollar Climate: The Exuma Cays of the Bahamas enjoy a sub-tropical climate, which makes for generally good weather year-round. Description: The Exumas are famous for their cruising grounds which are supposed to be among the finest in the Western Hemisphere. The Exumas are of striking beauty. They provide the shallow crystal waters of the Great Bahama Bank to the west contrasted by the cobalt-blue waters of the 5,000-foot-deep Exuma Sound to the east. The major settlement is George Town, which provides medical and shopping facilities as well as hotels, car and boat rentals and an International Airport. The best hotel, the “Four Season”, is perched 11.5 km away from the Airport at the sea side.

Pros: Fishermen angle for bonefish, wahoo and sharks (Exuma Sound has long been praised by deep-sea fishermen as the finest fishing spot in the Bahamas); the government angles for foreign residents. The bait: No taxes on capital gains, income, sales, dividend or inheritance. Cons: Buyers and sellers must split a stamp tax ranging from 2% for properties worth less than $20,000, to 10% for those worth $250,000 or more, according to the Bahamas Real Estate Association.
