It's a rather silly topic, but one that I expect weighs heavily in the minds of many first-world travellers! My girlfriend is deathly afraid of spiders, and one of the first questions she asks when I suggest a trip is, inevitably, "But will there be tarantulas?!"

Mexico- not so bad in the resorts, but I wouldn't use a public restroom in the interior of the country. Anywhere in Central America, there will be at least the possibility of spiders the size of a plate. Australia- don't even get me started on the horror stories I've heard.

So I'm curious- aside from the obvious chilly Northern climates, are there any island places where running into an 8-legged monster are quite unlikely?

Hmm, that's an interesting question! I haven't travelled much to the tropics so I've never been confronted with a giant spider, but I've also heard that they are very secretive and not likely to be aggressive. The one time to really worry about a tarantula in your bed seems to be in rainstorms, when their burrows flood and they come inside looking to dry off

Tell your girlfriend that if spiders were exterminated, we'd all be driven mad by flies and mosquitoes, and probably diseased, too. Spiders are our friends!

Hmm, I agree with you in theory, Little Mermaid, but I think when staring down a big hairy spider all rationality tends to fly out of the window!

Here is the wikipedian map of where tarantulas live...

It looks like you could go to the World islands in Dubai, something in New Zealand, Japan, England, Portugal, ..., etc

If you look closely, you can see there are no tarantulas in some south pacific places.

Also there are not many in the Mediterranean.

Ha, you know, living in Mexico you think you would get used to the big spiders, but seems even those who grew up with the experience never lose the fear. I know for me, in the city not so much a big deal, but I hated going out into the country when I was a child to visit my aunts and uncles. Getting up at night for a glass of water was out of the question, for fear of what might be lurking around- you have to wait for a drink until sunrise!

i don't hate spiders, but I don't love them either. I was actualy bit a couple of times by a spider while i was in the garden last weekend. Not poisonous but they itch like crazy.

Its good to know there are some temperate/tropical areas of the world that are tarantula free.

On that note I leave you with these giant spiders found by soldiers in Iraq

Hi!
I stayed in Fiji for a couple of months, and not the hotels, right there in the villages. Saw a few bigger spiders, but nothing even close to tarantulas. It was actually a lot better for bugs than I expected. However, I'm not sure if your girlfriend would be too impressed with the cockroaches...

I live in New Zealand and we have only little spiders, like jumping house ones, their really friendly.

We have only one dangerous animal (Katapo Spider) and in the 24 years I've lived here I've never come across one.

Oh and those damned Aussies brought a red back here but they are only far far north and again, never seen one. Plenty of tropical beaches and Islands to enjoy and most are publicly accessed.

The one thing that could be annoying and its only in the south island jungles, are sand flies, hoards of them and they are really brutal. some as big as birds! leaving bumps the size of your head. Laughing

Hi,

I imagine it must be a nice experience, the contribution is interesting and I hope in the next future a chance to visit this place.

A Hug, bye.
