For some reason the thought of taxes have never crossed my mind when thinking about owning an Island. How much would property taxes be, or how would that work?

I might well guess there will be significantly different taxes based on where you buy.

Mine are running about $950/yr on 3 acres with a 1400sq ft house. Because I'm off the grid and only need a framing inspection, I haven't asked for a certificate of occupancy which adds the home value to the total property value. So right now I'm sailing along as if I have undeveloped land. I'll keep it that way as long as I can. With not needing all of the regular permits for hooking up to city electrical, water and septic, I've fallen off their radar.

I presume it would be the same price as any other residential land (assuming it is residential), although I think in the UK they're planning a new system where the council tax is based on luxuries such as a sea view aswell as proximity to cities and other factors. Suppose with an island, the two would cancel each other out though! Wink

I think when you have people looking at taxing you on your view, which is very subjective, it's time to vote them out and get some people in place that can focus on something more productive.

The problem with goverments is that everyone wants to make a difference. In the US we've had laws piling up for 200+ years to the point where there is nothing left to legislate but individual and states rights. I'd like to see a group in power for the next 50 years that did nothing but repeal stupid laws and programs so that we get back to the basics again. The way it's going, we will all be walking around in a big plastic bubbles someday so we don't hurt ourselves or anyone else.

In Texas, the state govenment only meets every other year for no more than 140 days. That way they just have time to get the important stuff done and forget the rest. I think that the original thought was to get business done in the winter then get back to your farm in time for spring planting. Wouldn't that be a refreshing change from the career politicians that we seem to vote in year after year?

Every country has different tax rates. And it will also defend on the location of the property. It can go from 10 to 30 percent. You better check with the local government how much tax they charge before you buy any property, just to make sure you are paying the right amount.
