We just rode out the storm in South Houston. No power or water yet but the trusty generator is keeping all of the food cool and a small window AC unit running as well as my computer! Galveston Island was hammered pretty bad. There is a stretch of I45 going down to the island where one lane of the highway is covered with boats for miles. They say that 1 in 4 homes on the water have been destroyed. The storm surge was more than 17 ft. Unlike Katrina, within hours of the storm passing I saw literally hundreds of relief vehicles headed into town. Everything from ambulances to gasolinetankers and portable showers. They had everything staged in San Antonio Texas in preparation for the storm. At least some people learn from their mistakes.

I wish that I was on McDonald Island right now listening to the loons calling rather than my generator running.

Haven't been back since I had to leave in a panic a little over a year ago when those hurricanes hit. I think about those beaches all the time and also the oil spill. I would love to see some pictures of Galveston and what its current condition is.

Galveston is alive and kicking. We went to the Schlitterbahn water park down there a few months ago. I'd say it was a much faster recovery than New Orleans. Rather than sitting around waiting for someone to help, in Texas we help ourselves and help others.
