Hey all, came across this article on how to start your cuontry in four east steps. Here is a summary of the steps.

Step 1: Make sure you are eligible

As tempting as it might be to declare your cubicle a sovereign state, customary international law actually does specify minimum standards for statehood.

You must have a defined territory.
You must have a permanent population.
You must have a government.

Step 2: Declare independence

Congratulations on joining the ranks of Transnistria, Somaliland, and a host of other countries that won’t be marching at the Olympics anytime soon. Just because you’ve met the qualifications and declared yourself independent doesn’t mean that you’re going to be taken seriousl

Step 3: Get recognized

There’s not much point in having your own country unless other countries acknowledge your existence. International recognition is what gives a country legitimacy in the international community and what ultimately distinguishes the New Zealands of the world from the Nagorno-Karabakhs

Step 4: Join the club

Since its founding in 1945, membership in the United Nations has become the gold standard of international legitimacy. “When you are admitted to the U.N, that’s a form of approval,” Talmon says. “It’s like a stamp [that says] you are now a full member of the international community.”

Wow! it seems so simple!

Great article Sampson. I think it really spells out to people how challenging it can be to start your own country.

I think many people who come to this forum truly believe that it is possible to start your own country, but as the article points out the barriers to forming your own nation are insurmountable.

Stevv, I think this is a perfect example of irony.

however, I applaud the author for figuring out how one would go about starting their own country. Its a well written article.

Interesting article Sampson, thank-you for posting it.

You wouldn't believe how many inquiries we get from people interested in starting their own country, or wondering how they can turn their present property into an independent nation.

I don't want to say its impossible, because nothing is impossible, BUT the article does a great job of pointing out that it is nearly impossible.

How do you define your territory? I presume it has to be an area of land, as in not a part of the sea-floor. Otherwise you could just sail out, drop anchor and say "the land where the anchor is is my country". Since you need a permanent population, it'd have to be big enough to fit at least one person in.

And that's another thing, how permanent is permanent? Do you have to be there a certain number of days a year to count as a resident? Or maybe, does the head-of-state have to be present at all times unless a trip is approved by the government?

Forming a government is probably the simplest step, if you've only a population of one you wont have much contest in the election!

By the way, steps 3 and 4 aren't necessarily (although they usually are) in that order. Applying for UN membership is a simple matter of writing to the Secretary-General and waiting until they approve you. Obviously this is easier if you are recognised, but you can get observer status, like the Exiled "Sovereign Military Order of Malta".

Where do you learn this fascinating stuff, Richie? Between this and the "reclaiming land" thread your knowledge is amazing!

I don't know, just stuff I pick up. I read the strangest things for leisure. I'm currently reading a tax book! Then I can't cite my references because by the time I quote it, I forget where I read it. The part about the anchor, though, was just a guess. Wink

As difficult as it sounds it might be a faster, easier and cheaper way to get things done on your property - what with environmental appraisals, building permits and the like. So, if the endangered yellow throated dingbat is found on your estate, just declare independence.

How to Start Your Own Country in Four Easy Steps

Step 1: Acquire land

Step 2: Acquire a population

Step 3: Create a constitution and a functioning government

Step 4: Behave like a real country toward other countries.

Acquiring land could be problematic, although there have been people who tried to create nations on oil platforms or land they created by building new islands.
