I read that custom is you can rename and island after you buy it. Is that true? That would be a good bonus for an island buyer.
Will the government change maps so it will show the new island name?
What would you name your island?
Margaritaville Island?.......that name is already taken. Dolphin island is taken, right? Millionaire Caye? |

That island name is a real party killer. Nobody will want to visit that island.
Maybe bikini island might be better? |

Islands are subject to the laws of the country in which they sit, so it's different for each country. It's quite common to rename an island in places like the Bahamas. For instance, if an island is called Rat Island and the new owners wish to run a resort, they might prefer something more appealing like Mangrove Island, for obvious reasons.
To formally change the name of island and have it recognized by cartographers might be an onerous process. The same might go for locals too. |

Its an almost universal rule, called the law of repute that a commonly held name eventually becomes the legal name.
Resort often rename islands, but to answer the question in general yes if you buy an island and call it a different name eventually that will become the accepted name; and after a long enough period this will become the legal name the island is known by. |

Underwear Island? Bikini Island? Why not Naked Island? To me that's one of the advantages of woning a private island. Judging by the skinny dipping poll elsewhere in this forum, others here share my view. _________________ Private Beach |

I think someone may have already taken the name naked island...well at least for a movie.
here is the movie description: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=57904
Suprisingly enought its not porn! when the google search came up for a movie called naked island I assumed it would be a porno. |
