This is really cool. An endurance swimmer is swimming over 100 miles to raise awareness of the danger that climate change poses to low-lying isles like the Maldives.

He previously brought media attention to climate change in the UK by becoming the first person to swim the length of the Thames.

Swimmer and Climate Campaigner Unveils Maldives Challenge

An endurance swimmer who plans to swim the breadth of the Maldives to raise awareness about climate change is unveiling his challenge at the Maldives High Commission in London.

Lewis Gordon Pugh, 36, plans to swim 160km (100 miles) through the Maldives over ten days from February 17 in order to highlight the dangers facing the nation because of rising sea levels.

“I hope my swim will raise awareness of the devastating effects of climate change on low lying islands like the Maldives. By swimming in areas threatened by rising global temperatures I want to highlight the impact of years of government inaction on climate change,” says Mr. Pugh.

“Governments should not pass the responsibility for climate change to the unquantifiable acts of individuals, but should instead be taking tough measures and introducing dynamic legislation that will force polluters to start making genuine reductions in their carbon emissions," he added.

Mr. Pugh writes on his website: “The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) recently predicted a 59cm rise in sea level over the next 100 years. This will have a devastating effect on the Maldives and its people. While they have done virtually nothing to contribute to the causes of climate change, their future now lies in our hands. Unless we all cut our carbon emissions today, the Maldives and many other low lying areas have no future.”

Last August Mr. Pugh, who is South African but lives in London, became the first person to swim the length of the Thames, to draw attention to the climate change issue in the UK."

Thats a great story, its a strange approach but it catches the attention of the media. I believe the more people hear something the more they begin to believe. Therefore the more we hammer the message home that climate it change is very real and very dangerous the more likely it is that people will listen. So often the media has been used as an issue of propaganda, it would be nice if we can use it for good and stop climate change.
