Having just read Amnesty International's latest report on the Refugee Crisis unfolding in and around Iraq I seriously wonder if 'we' can be of help to some of these distraught Human Beings. There must be huge amounts of land/perhaps Islands out there that with serious organisation/cooperation just perhaps could house some of these desperate people/families.

A dream perhaps...but we have such serious problems on our Planet at the moment that with very careful consideration, temporary solutions could be found. We need to live in a far different world than we do at the moment to reverse our terrible problems. Why not try solutions such as these?

I am serious. Any comments? Perhaps I will take this forwards. Thank you.

I think its an interesting idea, that we could use islands as a sort of refugee camp. The whole idea creates this image of an isolated fortress to protect these seriously disenfranchised and impoverished people. Unfortunately, I think there are a number of problems moving refugees and the poor to far off islands. First, it would require moving people from their homes, which i would say is not an ideal situation. Secondly, the infrastructure that would be required would require huge sums of money, money that could better be spent on aid within the country. Finally, at the same time we would be moving people to islands, we would have to be moving others off islands due to the rising waters that are a result of global warming (see the thread on this). Thus, you would be moving refugees off of one island, and putting different refugees onto a different island. Perhaps, I am being overly skeptical, or perhaps I missed your point. In any case, I would love to discuss this further with you.

All the best,

Coconut
