Horse Shoe Caye/Grenell Caye - Belize

Situated six to eight miles (12.5 km) southeast of Belize City and east of Stann Creek, these two islands are real assets. Due to their close range to Belize City, both islands offer easy vessel access to the main shipping channels. As the area is quite remote, this is an ideal place for those who treasure their privacy, and love to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the islands.

Horse Shoe Caye:

This island provides about 33 acres (13.5 hectares) of lush grounds and a nice beach on the west side which could be easily enlarged. By virtue of the singular shape of Horse shoe Caye, the island provides a natural protected harbour which is approx 40’ (12 metres) at its deepest. The shape of Horseshoe Caye makes it a natural deep water anchorage, which also lends itself by offering protection from storms and strong currents. Its relatively remote location ensures privacy yet it is close enough to the main shipping channels for easy vessel access.

Grenell Caye:

This charming sister island to Horseshoe Caye provides approximately 8 acres (3.2 hectares) of lush vegetation. Grenell Caye boasts several small beaches and elevations up to 12 feet (3.6 metres).

Horseshoe Caye and Grennal Cay have been in the same family for over two hundred years. The present owners moved to Tampa, FL shortly after their father passed. They decided shortly thereafter that they no longer had a need for these islands.

As for building type and construction, the general rule is that all buildings are restricted to two stories in height. Once you own the islandd, you apply to the Land Utilization Authority in Belmopan, Belize for building permission. You can apply to build anything you want as long as it complies with local laws. When you own the island, they may waive the 2 story limit if that's a serious consideration, but certainly check before proceeding.

As for building materials; Teak and other hardwoods are readily available and are in common use with poured concrete being used for external walls due to its resilience. There are a number of reputable builders to choose from.

What do the islands contain in terms of flora and fauna? You will generally find a variety of lizards, and birds from time to time as migratory instincts are followed. Turtles may use an area close to the beach for egg laying but they have not been observed on the beach for a while. Dolphins, turtles and other sea life are very much in evidence. Large cats exist only on the mainland.

The surface water temperature varies seasonally from 26 to 29 year round. Temperatures in Horseshoe Caye may be a little warmer as it’s protected from storms and strong currents which make it an ideal deep water anchorage.
