Seldovia Island Resort
Seldovia Island Resort, AlaskaHistory Seldovia is a small town with a big history in South Central Alaska. Evidence of early native seasonal hunting camps has been found on the south side of Kachemak Bay including the Seldovia area. What a land of plenty this must have been for them! It wasn't until the arrival of the fur trading companies during the late 1800s that a permanent settlement was established in Seldovia. The fur bearers of the area were quickly decimated by the trappers and the focus was quickly changed to other resources. Seldovia became the expediting centre for interior and western Alaska with its beautiful year round ice-free sheltered harbour. Adventurous people from the lower 48 poured through Seldovia on their way to the Gold Rush or the salmon rich waters of the state. Seldovia's importance as a port remained until after W.W.II when the network of roads throughout Alaska was established. The riches of the area fisheries would become the major source of Seldovia's economy through the 1980s. Until the great earthquake of 1964, the town's waterfront and bays were lined with canneries and fishing boats. The 1964 Good Friday earthquake sank Seldovia, literally, as much as six feet. The town changed by necessity to its current state, and the classic boardwalk cannery town was no more. Today, Seldovia is in a state of change. The commercial fisheries, mining and logging of the past are mostly memories. Tourism and sport fishing is the mainstay of the economy. The future, as in the past, is what nature provides. How wisely we use nature's bounty will determine the future of this beautiful little town. Adventures
