It really is 176 acres of raw beauty. The water is the breathtaking turquoise colour that the holiday brochures talk about - as you draw closer you see its clarity and the magnificent coral appears teeming with an astounding array of tropical fish.

The long hardwood jetty leads you onto an island where preservation of the pristine environment is the crucial feature of this tremendous property. Unspoilt tropical rainforest is a haven for the native flora and fauna including the increasingly rare giant coconut crabs.

The beauty is undeniable and speaks for itself. However, as you know - with islands we need amenities and infrastructure so that we can maximize our enjoyment of them.

The infrastructure on this island is remarkable, with a full range of buildings for accommodation, entertainment, dining and all of the backup systems required.

There is huge rainwater storage capacity plus de-salination backup. Three generators are on site. Any one alone can provide all of the power requirements for the island so the unforeseen is well catered for. The power is all reticulated underground through professionally installed systems.

Direct flights to Luganville make it an easy journey into another world of soft white sand beaches lapped by gin-clear waters – and under those waters is an array of coral reefs and world class dive sites which make this a premier destination for divers, snorkelers and lovers of pristine, natural beauty.

Bokissa Private Island Resort is a 16 bungalow resort with the potential to become a retreat and used as a family home. There are 176 acres of tropical rain forest, white sandy beaches, surrounding coral reefs to 80metres deep, 2 sewerage systems, water supply and swimming pool. Construction is allowed without approvals and a new 75 year lease was signed in 2003.

You’ll have to choose from an impressive array of activities – or choose to do none at all … with magnificent mature trees lining the beach, maybe a hammock will call you to rest, relax and enjoy a truly unspoilt little bit of heaven.

And if you do feel the impulse to get into or onto the water, there’s in-house scuba diving and sports fishing, snorkeling, kayaks … or just swimming in the cool aqua water, either in the ocean or the fresh water pool.

Accommodation

Whatever style of accommodation you choose, it’s all right on the beach … sheltered and shaded by the canopies of enormous beach trees, and separate enough to provide a private retreat, with grassy surrounds perfect for lazing on a deck chair and surveying the scene. All accommodations are well appointed and very comfortable.

Each of the air-conditioned Beachfront Farés have absolute beach frontage along with screened timber shutters and ceiling fans. The Farés are well separated with their own "space" with deck chairs, a hammock, and gardens. A native style thatch roof provides insulation to maintain a cool interior but under the thatch, the fare is constructed of modern materials to assure your absolute comfort. The interior can be configured as a double with a queen-size bed to a quad-share with four single beds. There is 24hr 240Vt electricity, tea and coffee making facilities, a mini-fridge, desk and chair. The ensuite bathroom has a ceramic tiled floor, shelves for clothing, lush fluffy towels, hair dryer, and instant gas hot water for the shower and vanity.

The Deluxe Beachfront Fare is off by itself with plenty of privacy, deck recliner chairs, a hammock, spa and gardens. It has a large lounge and a separate bedroom.

There is also a duplex-style fare with 2 bedrooms, 2 ensuites, 2 lounge areas, a hot tub and a large private beach deck. This Deluxe Beachfront Villa sits right on the water's edge. It is divided into two parts - A & B - separated by a patio and a communicating hall and doorway. Either can be rented as a stand-alone Villa or the two can be used for a family with separate entries, bedroom, sitting area, ensuite bathroom, and coffee-tea making facilities. The 'A' Side is split-level and is the larger of the two units. It has a spacious lounge area and the bedroom has a queen size bed. The 'B' side is smaller and on one level. It has a lounge area, separate entrance, communicating door, a queen size and a single bed.

All food is included in our tariff and with four chefs and all organic food, plus access to fabulous seafood, you’re assured of eating well while you’re on Bokissa Private Island Resort – even afternoon tea!

Famous Santo beef, island pork and chicken, along with rock lobster, coral crab and freshly caught fish are on offer, and bread and desserts made daily on the island. We also have a special menu for children – they can eat at an earlier time with supervision if required.

Diving Bokissa Espiritu Santo

Dive sites near Bokissa are world class and divers come from all over the world to explore the wreck of the SS President Coolidge and Million Dollar Point. Bokissa Dive Resort's exclusive wreck of the M.V. Henry Bonneaud is a favourite of our guests and excellent training for the SS President Coolidge dives. The wreck of the Henry Bonneaud sits on the outer edge of the Bokissa Island coral reef and is only a few minutes from the Bokissa wharf in 30 to 40m of crystal clear water. The dive is generally combined with a dive on the shallow water coral reefs of Bokissa. The Henry Bonneaud is one of our prime night dives. At night, millions of small flashlight fish hover in the companionways and cabins of the sunken ship making a truly spectacular vision..

Bokissa coral reefs are truly special. There are few places in the tropics where you can walk out of your faré, cross a white sand beach, and swim through a lush and healthy living coral reef. Marine biologists and underwater photographers come to Bokissa especially to dive the reefs and comment that these reefs offer a unique opportunity to see and study the diverse south Pacific coral reef creatures. Hundreds of species of fish, hard and soft corals live in this protected marine sanctuary. They are quite tame, and the water is very clear making the Bokissa coral reefs perfect for underwater photos.

Kayaks, Snorkelling, Fishing

It’s a small island, but there’s plenty to do - There are very few places in the world where you can stroll out of your fare, across the white sand beach, slip on your mask and flippers, and discover vibrantly alive coral reefs waiting for you right off the beach. Don't forget your waterproof camera!

Snorkel gear is free for guests, and so is the remarkable experience of floating in the clear warm waters while the fish of many colours, shapes and sizes meander through the water below. And then there’s the crystal wonderland of corals of all shapes and sizes, from delicate branched bright blue corals to massive yellow corals, many of which are hundreds of years old.

You’ll find kayaks waiting for you on the beach, and you can paddle around the island, stopping off to enjoy the scenery as you go, or we can take you to a neighbouring island to paddle the pristine waters of the river, or to a local blue hole, where the water is incredibly clear and an equally incredible luminous blue.

And the fishing! If you like to fish this is the place for you. The fishing around our island is amazing, and we can organize trips to catch pelagic fish such as tuna, mackerel, wahoo, mahi mahi, sailfish and marlin. Because of our commitment to preserving the reef, we only fish for pelagics.

Nature Activities

Bokissa has 175 acres of rainforest with walking tracks through the island where you can see wild orchids and the many birds and animals that also call Bokissa home. The resort offers a guided tour to introduce you to the trails and the wildlife.

Our commitment to Bokissa Island extends to preserving the land, sea and animals that share this pristine environment. You may be lucky enough to see the turtle who breed on the island and the dugongs who visit the sheltered waters.

And if you want to see the many amazingly colourful fish, make sure you take in some fish feeding - get up close and personal with the astonishing variety of species who will want to make your acquaintance!

The Malo River Kayak Tour is exclusive to Bokissa, and will be one of the highlights of your stay. It has featured on Getaway twice and is a wonderful way to experience the “real” Espiritu Santo and see the gorgeous pristine waterways, blue holes, giant turtles and much more. Kayak (with assistance) up the quietly meandering Malo River under WW2 built bridges, enjoy a BBQ lunch on the beach and keep an eye out for eagles and sea birds.

There is no in-room TV, radio, phones, or business centre - this is a retreat from all those intrusions. Of course if you do need to download your email we provide a WiFi Internet connection in the lodge and your mobile phone will work at Bokissa.

Weddings and Honeymoons

Bokissa offers everything for a truly memorable wedding ceremony with a variety of sites for the actual wedding and all the ingredients for a wonderful honeymoon.

Our wedding coordinator will take care of all the arrangements, including the legal requirements, and discuss with you where on the island you wish to be married - on the beach in the glow of a fabulous sunset; in the thatched village church or perhaps in a forest glade. It’s the ultimate in romance!

Getting To Bokissa

Bokissa Private Island Resort is about a 2 hour, 15 minute direct flight from Brisbane and a 3 hour 30 minute direct flight from Sydney via Port Vila on Air Vanuatu. Pacific Blue also flies to Port Vila from Sydney and Brisbane.

Guests coming from New Zealand fly Air New Zealand or Air Vanuatu to Port Vila (about 2hrs from Auckland) and then change to a 50 minute local flight from Port Vila to Luganville.

Guests from New Caledonia fly to Port Vila on Air Vanuatu or AirCalin and change airplanes for the 50 minute flight to Espiritu Santo.

Bokissa staff will meet you at the Espiritu Santo airport. After a 5 minute car ride to the boat departure point, you will board Bokissa's own speed boat for a 25 minute boat ride across calm, protected water to the floating wharf at Bokissa Island where you will be welcomed with flowers and warm smiles.
