About Jepson Island

Jepson Island is located in the Thimble Islands near picturesque Stony Creek in the Southeast corner of Branford, Connecticut. Jepson Island is a little more than a quarter of an acre and is the closest island to the Stony Creek town dock.

The contemporary, open floor plan two bedroom house with its walls of glass and extensive decks has been attractively and fully furnished. A bunk room accommodates overflow guests. Legend says that Captain Kidd buried his treasure in the Thimbles and President William Howard Taft established his summer White House on one of the islands. During the 19th century the Thimbles were a popular tourist destination with one island boasting a hotel and others offering boarding houses. In the 1870s, people began to build their own summer cottages. Today the islands are quieter and home both to families who have passed them on for generations and more recent arrivals who love life on the water and the casual, relaxing life style, close to all conveniences yet totally away from the hubbub.

While there are as many as 365 islands depending on the tide, only 25 or 30 are inhabited. Horse Island, the largest of the group with 17 acres, is owned by Yale University and is maintained as an ecological laboratory. Money Island, with 12 acres, has its own little village with 32 houses and a library. Several other islands have multiple houses.
