Hanson's King Island was established in 1926 by Kendall Hanson and his brother Marion. Originally solely a full-service American Plan Lodge, it now offers both the full-service plan and do-it-yourself housekeeping options, in first class facilities. Nine fully modern waterfront cottages, each with a unique view of the lake, ring the island offering you a cozy base from which to explore this incredible lake. White pines, hundreds of years old, tower above the cottages. The atmosphere is peaceful and the views spectacular. Accomodations Accommodations on King Island are in private cottages around the perimeter of the island. There are nine fully modern guest cottages on the island. All of the cottages are waterfront and each enjoys a unique view of the lake. Our cottages range in size from two bedrooms (sleeping 4-5) to larger 3 and 4 bedroom cottages (sleeping 8). Kitchens are fully equipped for housekeeping, with full size propane range and electric refrigerator. Pots, pans, utensils and outdoor BBQs are provided. All 2 bedroom cottages have a three piece bath with shower or tub/shower unit; larger cottages have 1 1/2 or 2 baths. All linens, towels, blankets and pillows are provided with the cottage. King Island offers both housekeeping cottages or full-service American Plan packages, with three meals a day. Modified plans are also available. Meals are served in the beautiful log dining room in the lodge and feature wholesome home-cooked fare, complete with steaming soups, fresh garden salads, homemade bread and delectable desserts to complement the main course. The dining room is open for our housekeeping guests to join us as well. We just require reservations the previous evening. Our goal is to provide you with a true "getaway" from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. Consequently the only television and telephone are in the lodge. Our lodge also houses our licensed lounge where you may enjoy your favourite beverages, or simply relax and browse a variety of books, magazines, or catch up on the news via satellite TV. World Class Muskie Fishing Lake of the Woods is a tremendous body of water, covering roughly 951,300 acres. There are over 14,000 islands scattered about the lake and about 52,000 miles of shoreline to cast! King Island is located on Sabaskong Bay, on the east side of Lake of the Woods. Sabaskong Bay offers a safe haven, with many bays and hundreds of islands of all shapes and sizes. You can always find safe water to fish, no matter how hard the wind blows. The rocky shorelines are lined with majestic stands of white, red and jack pine and still look much as they did in the time of the early explorers. Lake of the Woods has a reputation as one of the best inland fisheries to be found anywhere. It also offers great variety. The lake boasts walleye, muskie, northern pike, small mouth bass, largemouth bass, crappie, perch and lake sturgeon, as well as numerous non-game species. What else can I do? The small sand beach at King Island is a favourite location for the kids to enjoy swimming, sunning and playing in the sand. Mid-summer water temperature is usually in the mid 70s; the water is very pleasant for swimming, water skiing and tubing. Kayaks and canoes are also provided for our guests' enjoyment. The portage trails and natural game trails on the nearby shore offer great opportunities for hiking and looking for shed antlers from deer and moose. Bird Viewing and Wild Life Wildlife and birds abound in the surrounding area. You will often see whitetail deer or black bears swimming from island to island when you're out in your boat, as well as numerous beaver and playful otter. Lake of the Woods is a unique ecosystem, formed where the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Forest Region, the Boreal Forest Region and the Prairie Grasslands converge. There are tremendous opportunities to view wildlife, waterfowl and birds. Birders will enjoy tiny hummingbirds, a vast array of songbirds, and local ducks with their rafts of ducklings, to the majestic Bald Eagles and white pelicans. There are several eagle's nests within a short distance of King Island. Aboriginal History Lake of the Woods is rich in history. A coveted area by both French and English fur traders, they warred over it in the 1600s and there are historical landmarks commemorating those days. The aboriginal people plied the waters of Lake of the Woods before that, however, and traces of their life are occasionally found on the sand beaches around the lake. There is a wonderful historical centre, just an hour from Nestor Falls, near the town of Stratton on the Rainy River. Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung is a National Historic Park located at the oldest Native burial mounds in Canada. |
