Just north of Australia lies Papua New Guinea, aptly named the land of the unexpected. Just a 1.5 hour flight from the capital Port Moresby, you reach the Lissenung area, a region placed between two crystal clear bodies of water: the South Pacific and the Bismarck Sea.

The Resort

The resort, which was constructed in 1996, consists of 4 bungalows, accommodating a maximum of 14 guests. The size of the island makes it easy to circumnavigate in about 15 minutes.

The set-up of the resort is simple and comfortable. The main house is where you will find cold drinks and delicious meals. Fresh seafood, fruits and ingredients are staples in the cuisine and most of the ingredients come from the local market.

All of the buildings are built in the traditional style, including thatched roofs and bamboo woven walls. These materials are time tested and appropriate to the environment, therefore they stand up well to even the strongest rainstorms.

Accommodation

The four bungalows are spread throughout the island allowing for plenty of privacy. Three of the four bungalows house two double or twin rooms, with the fourth being a single open room. All rooms are fitted with mosquito nets over the bed, a ceiling fan, a large desk and a wardrobe. In addition, they each have large verandahs with comfortable chairs for evening relaxation.

Two rooms have their own ensuite bathroom, each with toilet, basin and shower. For the other rooms, the share facilities are just a short stroll away. Although the water in your shower is not heated, the warm environment (28° Celsius/83F) usually ensures a pleasant water temperature. The rooms are serviced daily and all linens and towels are provided.

Diving

Although the region has strong currents, it also has world class diving. The ocean off Papua New Guinea has among the greatest biodiversity in the world. Diving at Lissenung consists of daily boat trips to the outer reefs, drop offs and wrecks, totaling a maximum of three dives per day and unlimited shore diving.

PADI dive courses from Open Water right through to Divemaster are available. In addition, a great number of specialty courses are also on offer, including PADI Scooter Diver.

The resort's owns 2 dive boats which can take you to any of the dive sites within 20-30 minutes. With a canopy, equipment boxes, tank racks and a ladder, both boats are perfectly designed for diving. A DAN oxygen unit for emergencies is on board both boats and the dive staff is trained in its use.

Dives include boat trips, tanks, weights, dive guide and tea, water and snacks on board. Divers staying on Lissenung Island get free shore diving during daytime (until 6pm) when booking boat dives in the morning.

An Environment & Safety Fee of U$ 3.00 per person per dive day will be charged on location. This amount helps fund the recompression facility in Port Moresby as well as environmental programs throughout PNG. This is not an insurance and does cover neither evacuation nor chamber treatment. For proper dive accident insurance Lissenung Diving strongly recommends DAN (Divers Alert Network) Insurance.

Sample Dive Sites

Lissenung Island Reef: Surrounding about 2/3 of Lissenung Island, this reef is an ideal spot for photographers and for night diving. You may encounter Seahorse, six different species of Clownfish, Cockatoo Waspfish, Crocodile Fish and hundreds of other species. Off the island is also the wreck of a small yacht, which was sunk in the 70s.

B25 "Stubborn Hellion": This American B25 Bomber was shot down on February 14, 1944 by the Japanese army during the battle around Kavieng. The plane sits upright in 12m (40ft) of water, half way between Lissenung Island and Albatross Channel. This dive is especially interesting, because the whole history of the plane and its crew is known

Matrix: This is probably the most beautiful drift dive in Kavieng. Fantastic hard corals in the shallows and huge fan corals from 20m (65ft) downwards make a beautiful scenery. And as you drift along you may see Mobula Rays, Turtles, Sea Snakes and of course some Sharks
