Long Caye, Belize

Perched on the brink of the continental shelf, the island base of Long Caye lies on the slender coral ring of Glover's Reef, an atoll 35 miles offshore from Dangriga, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. The entire Water Sports Centre blends into the undeveloped, natural atmosphere of this tropical island, unspoiled by the modern world. Shaded by a forest of palms and surrounded by endless coral reefs, Long Caye is truly a tropical paradise.

How important is having a truly private island? By comparison, in Ambergris Caye, where about 90% of the tourists in Belize visit, there are over 65 hotels with a capacity of 2000+ guests and 4000+ year-round residents. Compare that to Long Caye: one facility, 28 guests maximum and about 6 staff. Few other resorts can boast of such a remote and exclusive location.

When Slickrock first moved out to Glover's Reef Atoll in 1992, the goal was to develop a facility that feels non-developed. Obviously if you build a building, that’s some level of development. But throughout the Caribbean there are very few facilities that are this rustic by design. On Long Caye, development means a dozen cabanas, a well-stocked kitchen, solar-powered water pumps, a composting toilet, three dozen sea kayaks, a bunch of sailboards and surf kayaks, and a dive shop (the only thing not owned by Slickrock). There is no maid service; there are no air conditioners or flush toilets. But there is a fridge permanently loaded with Fantas and Belikin beer. It all represents the soft side of adventure travel - right down to the excellent Garifuna chefs who cook your meal and then sit down at the table with you to dine.
