L'Ottagono AlberoniL'Ottagono Alberoni, ItalyL'Ottagono Alberoni is an island in the Laguna Veneta and one of the 5 famous octagonal structures. It is based, as the name says, in front of Alberoni, and it measures 0.5 acres. It is entirely a private property. Part of the system of fortification that the Republic of Venice built against Turkish attacks, this octagon was built, together with Ottagono Campana or Abbandonato and with ottagono of Poveglia, to stop enemy vessels from penetrating the Venice Lagoon through the port of Malamocco. Refortified after the war of Candia, the island was than modified in '800 during the Asburg domination with reinforcing of the perimeter walls and the addition of further gun batteries. The island remained in military use until after WWII, when it was sold into private hands. Now available for purchase- a stunning piece of Venetian history and what could become a fantastic personal retreat. Please enquire for price and further details. |
