Manuhangi Atoll, French Polynesia

The surface of emerged land on Manuhangi is more than 150 hectares. The entire surface including the surface of the lagoon and the surface of the reef is about 900 hectares. The island counts several houses with permanent structures with cisterns, a shed and a chapel. The atoll is free from any building constraints... build whatever you wish.

Natural wells provide smooth water in addition with rain water. There is a “ho’a” (channel) that can be converted into 20 metres wide and a 3 metre deep fairway. Offshore, an anchorage is possible. A landing area is easily buildable.

The land portion of Manuhangi is planted with coconut palms, miki-miki and fara. The fauna mainly consists of coconut palm crabs and many species of birds.

Getting There

Tahiti is served by numerous airlines from all major airports. There are regular flights between Tahiti and Hao airport (1.150 km) that take less than two hours. Manuhangi is situated about 100 km away from Hao (a mere four hours boat crossing) where amenities like the Post office and public services can be found. Many boats from Tahiti provide, each week, equipment, food, and delivery.

History

Before its discovery by Wallis in 1767, the old Poumotu (Tuamotu’s inhabitants) used to call it “manu hagi”, which means “the loving bird”. It is a protected land, a paradise for all sorts of birds. The Manuhangi atoll has been practically uninhabited for years and years. Its current owners wanted to preserve a “last natural area”. Now and then, a few families would come and stay only the time of a copra crop. While their parents were working, the little girls would collect “POE PIPI”, (wild oysters with a tiny natural pearl on the beach. They would use them as change to play shops.

Business

The surrounding islands are renowned for the collection and cultivation of Tahitian Black Pearls - the world's most sought after pearls.

The neighbouring island of Hao is in the process of becoming French Polynesia's first 'tax haven'. Owning an asset like this within such close proximity to a tax haven provide obvious advantages.
