The island is situated in the ring atoll around the mountainous island of Raiatea encompassing a lagoon.

To the mainland it is 3/4 of a mile (1.2 km).

Ideal for the yacht owner and fisherman: the island sits at the deep water entrance into the lagoon. Therefore the open sea is close by and can be reached without difficult navigating. A pier could be built adjacent to the fringe of the deep water.

The island boasts sandy beaches and coconut palm groves.

Supplies can be bought in the capital of Raiatea, Uturoa, the distance being 6 miles (10 km) by boat through the protected lagoon.

The airport is in Uturoa.
