Message from the staff at Private Islands Online

Dear Subscribers,

When most people think islands, they think 'tropical': clichés of white sand beaches, palm trees, exotic birds and rum-filled cocktails. However, when you see as many islands as we do, there are a multitude of adjectives other than 'tropical' that spring to mind... words like sylvan, granitic, rustic, and verdant. Private Islands Online always has plenty of tropical islands in stock, but remember, islands come in all varieties...

Islands in Idaho. Who knew? Memaloose Island is located 22 miles from Sandpoint Idaho on Lake Pend Oreille; Idaho's largest and deepest lake at 43 miles long, with 111 miles of shoreline, and 1,158 feet deep. If sailing is your thing, this is a good-sized lake with diverse topography and varied enough conditions to keep thing interesting. The Sandpoint area has an abundance of recreational opportunities within easy reach: hiking, biking, skiing, fishing and golfing (with six golf courses in the Sandpoint area). Birdwatchers will enjoy seeing osprey; the large fish-eating hawk found around the lake. Eagles can also be spotted. With a wingspan of up to seven feet, these are truly magnificent creatures to watch.

Located in the Bay Islands of Honduras, Guanaja Rock stands alone as one of the most unique islands to come on the market. The "Rock" is such an unusual icon that it's featured in the Government of Honduras’ tourism adverts and the island has its own postcard. This beautiful historical landmark was once used as a mooring for the famous pirate Blackbeard. Local legend has it that treasure is buried on Guanaja Rock. When the owner was constructing the villas, he discovered a hidden cave on the island. He found many pieces of pre-Colombian pottery, but sadly, no treasure. Guanaja Rock also has its own dive site. The Jado Trader is a 230-foot long sunken freighter boasting an impressive variety of fish like Nassau, grouper, morays and the odd hammerhead.

Whereas the latter two properties are slightly unusual, Society Island in Tahiti, with its candy floss sand and luminescent water, embodies the definition of tropical. The relaxed and contented nature of the local people, along with the characterization of the island as a paradise, much impressed early European visitors. The romance of Tahiti endures to this day. Marlon Brando was so impressed with the area during his 1962 filming of Mutiny on the Bounty that he relocated to a South Pacific home on the Polynesian atoll, Teti’aroa.

And for those who have been watching the Little Eden Cay tender, it has been extended for an extra five days and is now closing on June 20th, 2005. There is still time to make an offer on this piece of paradise.
