This exceptional, untouched private island is situated at the entrance to Squirrel Cove, off the south east side of Cortes Island, in Desolation Sound (despite the name, a very beautiful area popular with boaters). The island is heavily treed with fir and cedar, as well as towering old growth fir trees.

There is over 1 mile (1.6 km) of shoreline, as well as protected, deep-water moorage. Protection Island has numerous possible building sites, and great views out over the water to the mainland mountains. Conveniently located within minutes of the government wharf at Squirrel Cove, it is also minutes away from the Squirrel Cove General Store, where supplies (including fuel) can be obtained.
