Feature Island

Regional Information

For thousands of years, migration from all directions to the Solomon Islands has created a country rich with traditions unrivalled elsewhere in the Pacific. Local life among the 900+ islands can be surprisingly interesting for visitors. Sitting just east of Papua New Guinea, the Solomons equatorial climate is humid throughout the year with few extremes of weather and an average temperature of 27 C. Diving in the Solomon Islands has a well deserved reputation and accounts for the majority of local tourism. Visitors lured to the Solomons with the promise of extraordinary diving and snorkelling will not be disappointed by the country's diversity of species and WWII wreck diving. Turtles, mantas and eagle rays are all common sights. And where else can you find a starfish in a submerged aircraft? When it comes to tourists, the Solomons are a strange paradox. Hype about the political tensions keep moneyed visitors at bay; expensive airfares keep the budget travellers away. But for those who do make it to the Solomons, having an entire beach to yourself is not uncommon.
