You may have no idea where Tonga is located, but that’s okay. Most of the world is oblivious to this South Pacific nation located about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii. Modern sailors have no problem finding Tonga – it’s a popular port of call for South Pacific yachties, some of whom never leave. In the summer, over a hundred humpback whales arrive in Tonga to mate and bear their young. Some of Tonga’s 176 islands are available for private purchase.

Foreign Ownership of Islands in Tonga, Oceania

Islands cannot be purchased by foreigners on a freehold basis in Tonga, but they can be leased for long terms with all the rights of ownership, including the reselling of a lease. After a one time payment upfront, there is a monthly payment for the duration of the lease. The maximum term for leases in Tonga is 99 years. The land can be used for residential or commercial, depending on approval.
