Elizabeth Island is a rich volcanic soil mound on rock, rising to about 20 metres above sea level. It’s a warm temperate climate, enabling year round use. 26.1 hectares (approx. 65 acres) on freehold title, set within the tourist regions of the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island, Bass Coast and French Island in Western Port Bay, zoned Rural Activity Zone (enabling tourism use), it could support an agribusiness and low-key tourist accommodation. It has previously been rented as holiday accommodation, but is currently occupied by the owner. One of only a few freehold title islands in Victoria.

Elizabeth Island is a rare opportunity to own your own secluded private island retreat. Just close enough to the thriving metropolis of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia: from hectic to heaven in less than two hours. It’s within easy reach of the boating ports of Corinella and San Remo on the mainland, and Rhyll on Phillip Island. Leave your boat at the Phillip Island Marina, where staff put it in the water after you load up with supplies. Dock your boat at the private jetty and mooring on Elizabeth Island.

There are currently two dwellings (a house and a caravan), plus a permit to construct a two bedroom dwelling. The island comes with a jetty, mooring and house, built in 2004, specifically eco designed for easy remote seaside living. The house, with veranda all around, faces north to views over the red cliff face of French Island National Park, where ever-changing hues reflect the sun’s time: yellow, orange, red, purple. Ample infrastructure and shedding to comfortably supply power, water and drainage to the house, equipped with all modern conveniences and a dedicated phone tower for ‘landline’ access. Easy access to the major mobile telecommunications networks and free-to-air television. Access to the national broadband network available via satellite.

Wander down to the jetty with a cuppa and a chair at any time of the day or night to haul in a fish, jump in for a swim, or just sniff the sea air and listen to the waves. From the dining table to the hammock, inside or out, sunrise or sunset, low tide or high tide, north or south, summer or winter, the ever-changing views are inspirational.

Deepwater sea access is off the southern point. Further along is a small mangrove stand beyond some rock pools. Coastal vegetation with bursts of white, pink or yellow floral, can be seen at various times and places on the island.

Over on the west coast of Elizabeth Island you can see out to Cowes and Bass Strait. Check out the French Island Vineyard Restaurant from this side, plenty more dining options if you boat over to Rhyll or San Remo.

The shoreline is an interesting walk along changing rocky kilometres of coastline, or take the highroad on the inland tracks to enjoy breathtaking sea and land views that include in the distance Coronet Bay, Settlement Point at Corinella, San Remo, Cape Woollamai, Rhyll, Western Port Bay, Bass Strait, French Island, Phillip Island, Churchill Island, Pelican Island, Tortoise Head Point and Mornington Peninsula. From high above the waters.

Take an island hop to nearby islands: French Island and Phillip Island. Perfect for kayaking or sailing. Take along your fishing gear and bring home some fish. Stroll to the peaceful northern point for a swim, or plunge in at the jetty. Try the southwest side for a change.

Whether lazing in a hammock from one of the several veranda vantage points with book in hand, or simply daydreaming, slip into island time and wonder at the peace and beauty around your very own imperturbable island.

Each day is greeted and farewelled by inspirational sunrises and sunsets. The added occasional surprise of the full moon rising over the water after dark, or setting over the water at sunrise, sparks a sense of magic and mystery.

On this beautiful private island sanctuary there’s a palpable sense of nature’s wonder and play.

Getting There

Elizabeth Island is situated in Victoria's Western Port Bay, by sea about 8 km south west of Corinella, about 2 km south east of French Island and about 15 km north east of Phillip Island. Corinella, the nearest mainland port, is about 150 km (about 1.5 hours by road) from Melbourne.

Many good options are available. Boat in from Corinella, 80 minutes drive from the Melbourne CBD, then a 10-15 minute boat trip, or take the French Island Barge from Corinella with your vehicle. Helicopter from Melbourne, or nearby Newhaven or Tooradin, all less than half an hour. Rhyll on Phillip Island is about 15-20 minutes by boat and Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula is about 30 minutes by boat.

The Phillip Island Marina at Rhyll is about an hour and a half from Melbourne by car and the boat ride to Elizabeth Island is about 20 minutes from Rhyll. The boat can also be conveniently left for 24 hours at the Rhyll pontoon while you take the 5 minutes drive into the major shopping hub of Cowes to top up on supplies.

San Remo is about 20 minutes by boat from Elizabeth Island and about an hour and 20 minutes by car from Melbourne. The Hastings Marina is even closer to Melbourne, about an hour, but a longer boat trip to Elizabeth Island, a bit over half an hour. Times vary with vehicles and conditions.

Helicopter flights to Elizabeth Island make for a quick exit, and there’s a heliport close by on Phillip Island at Newhaven, minutes by helicopter to Elizabeth Island and about 1 and a half hours by car from Melbourne.

Bird and Sea Life Watching

There are many species of waterbirds that make their home in the environs of Elizabeth Island. They can be seen feeding off the wetlands, wandering around the shoreline, or flying overhead.

White bellied sea eagles can be seen on or from Elizabeth Island. Black swans swim and feed around the island, especially towards low tide. You might see pelicans, oyster catchers, spoonbills, hawks or kytes, at night a white owl. Seals, dolphins and even the odd whale have been spotted off the shores of Elizabeth Island.

The waters off Elizabeth Island are renowned for good fishing. The deep channel off the southern part of the island attracts whiting, snapper, gummy sharks, salmon and many other fish species. The tidal flows bring fish close to the jetty. Staying so close to the water, you can choose to fish as the good weather presents.

Walk the varied shoreline, or stroll around the grassy tracks on higher ground. View a full rainbow against a grey sky following quelled stormy seas, or a calm orange blue sunset. Take in the high tide sights, the low tides reveal birds feeding off wetlands where just hours before was a large calm lake. Try clockwise, anti-clockwise, low road, high road, north-south, east-west.

Sea kayaking, sailing and motorized boating are all popular pursuits in Western Port Bay. Elizabeth Island provides direct access to Western Port Bay from the jetty, subject to tidal depth variations, or directly from the shore.

Jump in off the jetty at high tide, or take a dip with the birds at the sandy northern point. The surrounding scenery is a masterpiece of changing beauty that invites artistic appreciation and pursuits.

Consider doing nothing on Elizabeth Island (but lazing in the hammock).
