Coroa dos Ovos, BrazilThe island of Cambridgeton, or Coroa dos Ovos, is located in Cuma Bay, in the Amazonian part of the Maranhao State, Brazil. Guimaraesis the nearest city to the island and traveling by boat from the city to the Island is a thrill. Estuaries and small bays rich with tropical vegetation adorn the island, along with a kaleidoscopic variety of fish and exotic birds including the Guara, one of the most beautiful species in Brazil. The island is also a protected area for roosting birds during their southward migration. The history of the island is fascinating due to several shipwrecks that occurred nearby. One of them, a ship from Europe called the Cambridgeton, lent its name to the island. Another shipwreck in 1864 claimed the life of Antonio Goncalves Dias, a famous Brazilian poet and writer. The island is largely formed of vast dunes of white sand and low Mangues vegetation. One side of the island faces the continent, while the other has an expansive view of the Atlantic Ocean.
