About West Ballenas Island

West Ballenas Island, the northernmost of the two magnificent Ballenas Islands located in the Strait of Georgia of British Columbia. Situated off of Vancouver Island's beautiful east coast and overlooking the Winchelsea Islands and more distant mountain peaks, this spectacular private island provides a breathtaking setting.

Approximately 100 acres in size, West Ballenas Island is one of two islands making up the Ballenas Islands, with Crown-owned South Ballenas Island being the other.

Located 2.5 miles offshore of Vancouver Island and about five miles southeast of the popular Town of Parksville, West Ballenas is easily accessible by boat as well as floatplane and is only minutes away from services and amenities.

The island's shoreline is varied and includes rocky stretches, sheltered bays, pebble beaches on the south end of the island and a small sandy beach on the west side of the island. Although the island is mostly rocky, there are numerous treed areas with Douglas Fir, poplar, shore pine, and arbutus. The highest point of elevation is 109', and there are steep bluffs throughout the island.

A 6.96 acre portion on the north end of the property has been expropriated to accommodate a government-operated lighthouse.

History

The Ballenas Islands were originally named in 1791 by the Spanish as 'Islas de las Ballenas', meaning 'Islands of the Whales'. West Ballenas Island was later called 'West Ballinac Island', eventually becoming known as its present-day name. The island was used during World War II as part of the coastal defence. Remnants of military improvements can still be found on the island, including the foundation of what appears to be an old lookout station, a ramp in the cove at the south end of the island, and a trail running from the ramp to the lighthouse on the north end of the island (although the trail is now primarily overgrown).

Located in the Ballenas Channel in the Strait of Georgia, West Ballenas Island is off the east coast of Vancouver Island, approximately 5 kilometres north of Dorcas Point and 10 kilometres east of Parksville.
