Eueiki Island, Tonga

Where is Tonga?

The Kingdom of Tonga, in the South Pacific, is spread over 1000 nautical miles and divided into 3 groups: Tongatapu, the capital in the South; Ha'apai at the center; and Vava'u in the North. Vava'u lies 240km north of Tongatapu and consists of over 50 islands, Eueiki being in the center of the island group. Vava'u is a short flight from Nuku'alofa, and about 2 1/2 hours from New Zealand. International Flight services into Nuku'alofa are provided by Air NZ and Air Pacific. Domestic flights are serviced by Chatham’s Pacific Airlines, though they do not fly on Sundays. The Kingdom of Tonga is the heart of the Polynesian Culture, and one of the oldest kingdoms in the world. This is the only Pacific nation which has never been colonized, and is a true monarchy. It therefore retains the authentic character and traditions of the South Pacific. We will attempt to make your stay at our resort an educational and cultural experience that highlights the untold story of the greatest seafaring migration in human history.

Tonga receives less rain than other tropical areas and high temperatures average 25C with moderate humidity, creating a comfortable tropical climate. English is taught in all Tongan schools, however, native Tongan is still spoken in the outer islands. The local currency is the Pa’anga but most commerce is conducted using the currencies of Australia, New Zeeland, the United States and Europe. Travelers Cheques are recommended for visitors.

About Us

Eueiki Island is proud to be an eco-resort. We utilize solar power and use collected rain water, which we filter and store in tanks for our use. The resort is connected with the outside world by VHF radio telephone, and our resort cell phone. We provide and serve local foods and we recycle where possible. We acquired Eueiki Island from the Tongan government in 2001 and we are the first and only human inhabitants of the island, making Eueiki Island Eco-Resort the perfect destination for those seeking peace and serenity. The resort is situated in the heart of the South Pacific on a 24-acre, privately-owned island paradise.

The island is known for the nicest beach with the softest sand in the kingdom, fringed with swaying palms, pristine clear waters, a lush tropical forest, rich bird life and amazing caves, cliffs and rock formations formed by the tides. Our island is surrounded by a large colorful coral garden and lies in the middle of a 'humpback whale' nursery. It’s the only place in Tonga where you could be lucky enough to swim with whales right from the beach!

Restaurant and Bar: Along with International cuisine, the restaurant also servers many in-season island specialties… The bar serves rum, vodka, whiskey, gin and national well drinks along with a limited selection of wine. Ice cold beer is also available.

Island Activities: Whale Watching: Eueiki Island Eco-Resort is located in the center of an island group where the humpback whales come each year from late June through October. The whales leave the open ocean to give birth to their calves in the warm and protected tranquil waters of Vava’u. Eueiki Island is situated between two of the three deep water channels where the whales enter the island group from the south. Swim With Whales and Whale Watching Tour – Eueiki Island is ideally situated in the center of this whale nursery. You can take a tour from the island on our traditional 37ft outrigger “Tofua’a Moana”. Taken from the Polynesian design, this outrigger has been built on the Eueiki Island by the owner, Mark Belvedere, and fitted with an e-tech engine, which is the forerunner in quiet non-polluting technology. The Tofua’a Moana (Ocean Whale) is an environmentally friendly vessel, moving quickly and smoothly to provide you with the most comfortable and non-obtrusive approach to the whales.

Food Gathering: Resort staff members conduct guided reef walks that serve as food gathering expeditions. At low tide we might collect octopus, sea urchins and other local delicacies for you to enjoy. Elsewhere on the island you can gather papaya, mango, lime and other fruits that grow in the wild and you can learn to husk, grate and use coconuts for both food and crafts.

Flora and Fauna: Tonga is located on the Pacific Ocean’s infamous “ring of fire” and prevailing currents bring an abundance of volcanic nutrients to the islands to nourish our rich soft and hard coral beds. Our lush tropical forest provides the ideal setting to discover nature’s non-marine beauty from a South Pacific perspective. The island is home to a large number of bird species and lucky bird watchers may even catch a glimpse of “flying foxes” or the Tongan Whistler, one of Tonga’s two endemic species.

Water Activities: The resort is surrounded by many nearby islands that make ideal destinations for kayaking, sailing and uninhabited island exploring. Our island is fortunate to have beaches that provide favorable swimming at all tide conditions and our nearby reef is one of the best snorkeling areas in the Kingdom. We provide snorkeling gear, but we suggest you bring your own equipment for maximum comfort. Other activities can be arranged through the main island in Vava’u upon request.*

Hiking: Our 22-acre island has two beautiful hiking trails. The trail to the upper plateau rewards its hikers with spectacular views. Another interesting hike is on our neighboring island of Euakafa, where the tomb of a Samoan princess and her lover await your arrival.

*If you wish to go on a tour with a town-based tour operator, please ensure with them that they will pick you up from Eueiki Island.
