Hello Islanders,
it would appear that the State of Florida might soon join the city of Atlantis in becoming a new country. It will be this new country, because if the rains keep up, there won't be anything above the waves of the ocean, except the condo's and hotels rooftops. Would hate to own an island down there in Florida, which has been soaked by all that rain ! the only things that are enjoying the sudden flash floods are the burma pythons and alligators ! Only because it's easier to move on the streets and golf courses, because nobody is outside ! And for those of you who might own an island in Florida, i would say i hope you have a boat to live on, because dry land will be far to scarce !

I'm going to really answer your ?. I would want an observatory so I could star gaze. I would want a brewery so... you know why. I would want a Tennis court right in the middle of "jungle". A paintball area would be super cool. I would want one of those RC planes with a camera too.

If I was on an Island I would have a building to house my weapons. Your a lowly human you can't predict or forsee anything, you can only hope to be ready for the "if's". As far as I know nobody in here is Sun Tzu so his words are feathers. Everyone wouldn't be allowed to walk around with guns on my island but they would be there in a very secured location. I would even have some in lock boxes in certain areas, just in case you can't get to the "secure location".

I believe that anytime you make a large purchase, you have the obligation to check things out as thoroughly as possible. Fixing things like septic and off the grid power systems can be expensive as can be docks and breakwalls.

I'd talk with the neighbors and ask about the seasonal water levels. I was looking at an island in a river once and found that in the spring, 3/4 of it is under water. If it's undeveloped property you will want to talk with the local planning comission and make sure that the island can be developed. Also find out what the process is for getting plans approved. I had approximately a 6 month process to go from site planning to final approval. Many areas have minimum setbacks from the shoreline which may severly restrict where you can build. You also have to make sure that you have enough room for a septic field and that there is a way to get building materials onto the island and to the building site.

     Hello Rod,
I would hate to have to leave the region of Maine and its' waters, for the warmth of St. Croix. Not with the beauty so well defined here in the northeast, where the change in seasons, brings about it's own joys and sorrows . To have to move, or even to voluntarily move that far south would be agony for me , especially after living my entire life in the northeast, and the proud state of Maine. But that is merely my opinion, would rather be here in the northeast, then anywhere on the planet !
Sal's Dad,
The biggest issue with water pumps is making sure that you get one with enough hydraulic head to lift the water from where it is to where you need it. I.e. from the lake to the top of your roof. The manufacturer will have specs listed for each pump. The second thing to look at is flowrate. If you will be running a shower and say a faucet at the same time, you will need something like 2-3gpm.
In order to minimize wear and tear on the pump I would highly recommend installing a pressurized bladder tank. The pump will push water into the tank against a rubber bladder with air pressure on one side. When you turn on a faucet or flush a toilet, the air pressure will push out the water until a controller detects that the pressure has fallen below a minimum threshold. At that point the controller will close a circuit telling the pump to turn back on to refill the tank. If setup properly this will prevent the pump from turning on and off every time there is a demand for water. The larger the tank, the fewer the pump cycles.

Rod,
That Francis house looks like it's worth a tour. I love it when someone does something really creative like that. Also, you are right that the evaporative/swamp cooler is probably not an option where I am. They work great in the Southwest but with the high humidity the efficency goes way down.

i do not know right off the bat whether this magazine has been previewed by some of the readers. But next time your online, check out Cottage Life, it has many of the same kind of articles that good people should know about, since it avails itself to people in the remote parts of the world, just as islanders wish to do as well !
