Islandowner,

I think that the best defence is knowing your neighbors and having them look out for you. I've got 4 different families checking on my place from week to week and emailing me updates. The one thing that I do worry about are some kids coming out and vandlizing the place. My day/night camera is the first bit of insurance. At least I'll have the people on film and can follow up with the police.

One thing that I'm investigating is a web cam that has a motion detector and automaticaly starts recording. I purchased one for my business to see how it works. I can pan and zoom the camera from my home or remote computer. Next step is to see what I might be able to do with limited bandwidth on the island. I.e. do I just record video and hope that the computer is still there when I get back or do I setup some kind of cell model or satellite internet so that I can keep closer tabs on the island.

For a while there I was almost spending more time in the winter than the summer becuase all of the material had to be hauled across the ice. You can't get a very big barge on the lake. We move almost 40,000 lbs of lumber and steel a kilometer across the lake in 5 days. I did the same thing with my power system the previous year.

What I would like to do once the interior is done is get a pellet stove setup so that I can snowmobile or snowshoe over in the winter and get some heat in the place. For water in the winter I'll probably have to cut a couple of holes in the ice and cycle the pump periodically with a return to the lake so that things don't freeze up on me.

I keep meaning to tell you, I enjoy your island movie reviews and you should do more of them! Although, maybe try something a little more cheerful than Castaways or Lord of the Flies next time....

I go over to the local islands all the time, but this will be my first over christmas.

Christmas is a different experience here in Thailand because everyone is Buddhist, although they do like to eat lots so are quite happy to join in celebrating with us

I agree Catriona that northern islands can be wonderful... coming from a hot as opposed to cold weather country there is much more novelty in them for me. One day I dream of spending the holidays on a snowy island in Maine!

Lots of people look for islands for different reasons, so I was wondering whether you prefer to look for your new property in a temperate or tropical zone? Personally, I'm looking to buy in a temperate area because of the environment and the variety of plant and animal life. What do you look for and why?

Has any of you ever been on what's called nude beach? I am hardly to be seen wearing clothes while I'm on the seaside and I couldn't help noticing that most of you see it as behavior directly related to deserted island. Do you think I am crazy?
