About Fox Island

Fox Island is ideally located in Blind Bay (the bay formed between Nelson Island and Hardy Island) about two to three hours north of Vancouver, British Columbia on the Sunshine Coast recreational playground.

Access is either by float plane (20 minutes from Vancouver), boat (2-3 hours from Vancouver) or car/ferry/private boat (2-3 hours total travel time from Vancouver). Powell River, the closest community, is about a 30 minute car drive north of the Saltery Bay Marina (about fifteen minutes by boat from Fox Island).

The waters that surround Fox Island are crystal clear and drop quickly to 20+ foot depths on the west and 250+ foot depths on the east side. The north side includes a productive clam beach with plentiful oysters and mussels, while surrounding waters offer excellent rockfish and lingcod catches.

Of course, salmon, crab and prawns (caught directly in front of the cabin) are always on the menu around the Strait of Georgia (the entrance waters to Blind Bay), where the occasional Orca whale pod passes within sight from the deck of the island’s cabin. Resident seals cruise almost nightly just 100 feet from the cabin deck while multiple bald eagles assert local airspace dominance from perches along the shore.

The area is also well known for scuba diving and kayaking, and the waters around Fox Island are perfectly suited for tubing and water skiing during the summer months.

The island has old growth forest but can be traversed by foot without too much difficulty. Roughly hourglass in shape, the north half has been rezoned in preparation for subdividing into five, approximately five-acre lots, four containing recently drilled wells and approved septic sites.

Building sites vary from locations perched atop a 100+ foot cliff with a stunning panoramic view of the Strait of Georgia, to an idyllic forested peninsula with estate-like privacy.

The south half of the island contains a rustic cabin of about 1500 square feet with four bedrooms sleeping up to 13, and a two car garage for housing any vehicles or boats kept on the island. A rock and gravel, but readily usable, boat launch by the 70 foot dock (L shaped) facilitates water activities.

Although ready for immediate use, the island is also poised for upscale enhancements should a buyer so desire through the services of Spick and Sons Projects, Ltd. (www.spickandsons.com ) who specialize in site development as well as the design and construction of high-end “cottages”.

Fox Island also contains an historic granite quarry, currently equipped but not in operation. The grey, salt and pepper granite from this quarry has won awards for its quality and color and has been used in construction throughout the northwest for countertops, tiles, building surface slabs, walls and other decorative uses.
