Nuku Resort, or Nukuyaweni, which means, “Footprints in the sand” in Fijian, is named for the turtles which are born on the island and when ready, make a heroic trek across the sand to the sea to continue their aquatic journey through life.

This boutique resort and private retreat is well-positioned on the western, sunset-facing and protected leeward (sheltered from wind) side of Gau Island on the Koro Sea.

The, “Bay of Angels” an iconic South Pacific golden sand beach (500 meters in length) fronts the property. The, “North Bay,” with its' deep water blue hole, a favorite hang-out of Giant Mantas, allows large boat access and safe harbor. The resort has been hand-crafted, largely of stone and local timber with many custom touches and a design style that blends British Colonial with traditional Fijian elements. Hand-laid stone pathways meander throughout the property.

Powered by the sun and sustained by rain-catchment and holding tanks (with generator backup for power and desalination system in the event of low rainfall), rich volcanic soil provides an abundance of tropical fruits and vegetables while the sea is an ongoing source of, “fresh-as-it-gets” seafood of many varieties. An outdoor wood-fired stone pizza oven and fish and meat smoker compliment a well-equipped stainless steel commercial kitchen.

The resort currently accommodates 5 couples in traditional Fijian style bures (cottages) and includes an owners residence and several other accommodations for additional residents, guests and staff. There is a large stone storage building that includes a robust storm shelter. There are several prime sites remaining for the construction of luxury villas and 50% of the beachfront remains undeveloped.

As a leasehold property, there is a common incentive between the Fijian landowner and the lessee for harmony and success. In collaboration with the local Fijian villagers who help support and sustain Nukuyaweni with their labor, skills, food they grow in their gardens or acquire from the sea and living knowledge of Fijian culture, a mutually supportive and beneficial relationship can be cultivated over time for the benefit of all.

This is an opportunity to experience the real Fiji where the hard work has been done and the time has come to truly enjoy what this very special tropical paradise has to offer.

Location information/Topography

Gau Island, the fifth largest island in Fiji, is characterized by unspoiled beauty- a rugged, largely unexplored mountainous interior with a peak elevation of 700+ meters, old growth tropical rainforest, ancient mango and banyan trees, numerous coconut palm-fringed beaches, a barrier reef protecting a tranquil lagoon, waterfalls and unique flora and fauna. There are even geothermal hot springs! Gau Island (Pronounced “Now”) is also home to 12 small traditional Fijian villages that lie along the coast.

The impressive coral reef, which encompasses a pristine blue lagoon, has a natural opening, allowing for the passage of boats and even large yachts to enter and drop anchor in the serene waters. This extraordinary marine environment is known for excellent sport-fishing and world-class diving in locations such as the Ngali Passage, located 15 minutes from the resort beach.

The island has it's own airfield and small terminal, serviced by Fiji Air, the inter-island airline, and is a 20 minute flight from Suva, Fiji's capital. The Gau airfield is a short boat ride from the property.

To sum up, Gau Island and Nukuyaweni are essentially untouched by the inroads of time and adverse development. There is no traffic- actually there are no cars, no shopping centers, no fast-food restaurants. Far from the crowds, pollution and stresses of the “modern world” this is an opportunity to create a unique lifestyle with or without additional rental income. With the capital of Suva a boat ride across the Koro Sea, supplies are ordered and shipped by cargo boat or ferry. Phone in your order for New Zealand wines, Australian grass-fed beef and fine cheeses and you have the best of both worlds.

Nuku Resort maintains the only Commercial Tourism Lease on this amazing island. There truly is no competition on Gau Island, FIJI.
