Layang Layang Island

Layang Layang Island Resort is a singular outpost on Swallow Reef, a coral atoll rising from the deep sea floor of the Spratly Islands. Unlike any other destination in Malaysia, the island is a reclaimed 50-acre naval and research site that houses a world-class dive resort. Built in the style of a traditional Borneo longhouse, the resort is a seasonal operation that historically opens from March to August to coincide with the hammerhead shark mating season. As of early 2026, the resort's operating license has been revoked by the Ministry of Tourism, and the property is currently closed until further notice.

Accommodations & Design The resort features 86 air-conditioned guest rooms constructed from tropical timber to reflect the aesthetic of local indigenous tribes. The Superior Rooms are standard twin-share units with private verandahs, while the Deluxe Rooms offer expanded floor plans and premium finishes. The design is utilitarian yet comfortable, focused on providing a sanctuary for serious divers. Each room includes a refrigerator, telephone, and private hot showers, with the layout prioritized to ensure easy access to the central dive center and freshwater swimming pool.

Amenities & Inclusions Facilities at Layang Layang are engineered for isolation and high-intensity marine logistics.

Gastronomy: A 150-seat restaurant serving a mix of Asian and International cuisine. Guests receive "Full Board" service, which includes breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and late-night snacks.

Marine Center: A state-of-the-art PADI facility with 10 catamaran dive boats. The center is equipped to handle over 100 divers simultaneously, focusing on the 13 surrounding dive sites.

Bird Sanctuary: The island’s eastern end is a protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds, including Great Crested Terns and Brown Boobies.

Leisure: Includes a large freshwater pool (essential given the lack of natural beaches), a massage center, and a conference room for group briefings.

How Private Is This Island? Privacy at Layang Layang is absolute due to its extreme geography. Located in the middle of the South China Sea, there are no neighboring islands, no public ferries, and no unauthorized vessels within the 2,000-meter deep waters surrounding the atoll. The only inhabitants are the resort staff and a small Malaysian Naval presence on a separate part of the reef. Access is strictly controlled via the private airstrip, making it a "sovereign" dive fortress where your only contact with the outside world is via the resort’s satellite connectivity.
